65 teams are now down to 16 after the 1st 2 rounds of the 2007 NCAA Basketball Tournament. No double digit seed has made it this far, but there are some feel-good schools worth rooting for. Over the next 4 days, we here at Sport will take a look at each bracket.
Up first: West Regional – San Jose
vs
#1 Kansas vs #4 Southern Illinois – Kansas is on a 13 game win streak, including an overtime win over Texas in the Big 12 conference tournament. The Jayhawks are shooting over 55% from the field in the first two games of the NCAA tourney, including a 12 pt win over Kentucky (what in the name of Adolph Rupp is going on in Lexington?). The Salukis are the strongest of the mid-major teams and if the defense can slow the KU guards, they have a chance. Take the Jayhawks.
vs
#3 Pittsburgh vs #2 UCLA – Both teams won their first 2 games of the tourney, but neither are standing out. Pitt has gone 3-3 in their last 6 games before the NCAA’s, including a 23 pt loss to Georgetown in the Big East tourney finals. UCLA dropped its last 2 games, including a first round in the Pac 10 tourney to California. When in doubt, go with the team who’s been there before. Go with the Bruins in this one.
