A-Rod gone from Yankees

It looks like Alex Rodriguez will opt out of his contract with the New York Yankees and will become a free agent. With this,Alex Rodriguez ARod will be free to sign with any team. Yankee officials have said in the past they do not plan to be one of the teams bidding if Rodriguez opts out.

Too bad, too. Rodriguez had a great year with the team, but I wonder if this is the first of many Yankee players leaving the ballclub. It started with Joe Torre not taking the Yankees offer (which was a paycut). With other free agents like Jorge Posada and Mariano Rivera, talks could be interesting for this winter.

Rox and Sox

It all starts tonight for the 2007 World Series as the red hot Colorado Rockies travel to the Northeast to take on the Boston Red Sox in Fenway Park. Boston posted a regular season league best 96 wins while the Rockies have won 21 out of 22 games to reach the Series. Boston gets the home field advantage as the American League took this year’s All Star game back in July.Josh Beckett

We always like the underdog and have loved watching the Rockies on their month-long streak, but the Red Sox have too many horses….and good pitchers. Look for the Rockies magic to dry up as Boston takes this in 6.

Joe Torre no longer Yankee Manager

After 12 years and 4 World Series titles, Joe Torre is stepping down as the manager of the New York Yankees. Yankee management had offered Torre a 1 year contract for 2008 with a base of $5 million per year, including incentives to increase total payouts up to $8 million. This came after Yankee officials had met for several days to determine the course of action to take with Torre after an up and down year with the Yankees. Joe Torre steps down as manager

This contract offer seems to be a slap in the face to Torre. The Yankees were essentially giving Torre a pay cut from his previous 3 year, $19.2 million contract expiring after the 2007 season. The Yankees positioned themselves to deflect critisism by offering this low contract and state it’s Torre not wanting to come back to the team.

It’s a sad day for Yankees and for baseball. Torre is a stand-up guy and 2007 may have been his best managing feat in his career. The Yankees were all but written off from having a winning season in May and June, let alone even making the playoffs. With a suspect pitching staff suffering from injuries, Torre was able to get the team to play good ball and earn the wildcard.

It’ll be interesting to see who the Yankees tab as their next manager. The play here is either Don Mattingly or Tony Larussa.

Yankees at Mile High

Interleague play continues as the Derek Jeter and the New York Yankees play the Colorado Rockies in Coors Field for a 3 game series.  Interesting reports from the Rockies camp all year long regarding potential trade rumors of Todd Helton.  The cornerstone of the Colorado franchise since he was drafted in 1996, talks of potential trades with Boston and now the Yankees persist.

Todd HeltonThe Rockies would be foolish to lose its biggest star.  The team is finally over the .500 mark and is only 5 1/2 games out in the NL West.  Let’s see if Coors Canaveral can hold on to its top rocket.

Griff’s breaks hand playing Hulk Hogan with the kids

Ken GriffeyThe oft-injured Ken Griffey Jr., who registered yet another injury with a broken hand in December, had been silent about his latest setback.  Finally coming clean, Griff claims he was wrestling with his daughter and 2 younger sons and fell awkwardly on his left wrist.  Can this guy ever catch a break?  If he did, I’m sure he’d pull a muscle.
