Av’s almost out

Posted by Patrick on March 29, 2007

Joe Sakic and the Colorado Avalanche

There’s a first time for everything, as the saying goes.  Since the Nordiques moved from Quebec to Denver to become the Colorado Avalanche, they’ve made the Stanley Cup playoffs every year, including 2 titles in 1996 and 2001.  The Av’s are chasing the Calgary Flames for the 8th place seed in the West, but it’s looking like it’s too little, too late.

Shop.NHL.com has got the long sleeve T’s with player numbers and names, and now they’ve got the short sleeve T’s, too.  Get your Joe Sakic shirt and all your Avalanche gear today!

Kyle Busch takes Bristol

NASCAR and the Car of TomorrowKyle Busch wins the Food City 500 and the first race featuring the Car of Tomorrow, the new version NASCAR has invested seven years of research to make the stock car more safe.  The biggest changes:  moving the steering wheel three inches to the right to move the driver further away from crash impact, and the wing spoiler instead of the blade to give the car better aerodynamics.  Most drivers weren’t in favor of the new car, including Tony Stewart saying it’s “like driving station wagons”.

Final Four Fantastic

Posted by Patrick on March 25, 2007

Talk about your top-heavy Final Four!  2 #1 seeds will play 2 #2 seeds in the National semifinals for the right to play for the NCAA basketball championship.  Let’s take a look at the matchups:

UCLA Bruins  vs  Florida Gators

UCLA Bruins vs Florida Gators

The Bruins defense has been dominating throughout the tournament, and showed up big time in shutting down Kansas to win the West Regional.  Arron Afflalo and Darren Collison are leading the Bruins into the rematch of last years Championship game against Florida, who dispatched Oregon with clutch shooting and rebounding at the end of the game.

Georgetown Hoyas  vs  Ohio State Buckeyes

Georgetown Hoyas vs Ohio State Buckeyes

The Hoyas are back in the Final Four after 22 years, and yet they look like the same team lead by Patrick Ewing.  Stout defense and strong inside play got them past North Carolina in overtime.  They’ll need every bit of that defense when they take on Ohio State.  While teams pack the zone to crowd Greg Oden, Mike Conley Jr. and Ron Lewis continue their awesome guard play with timely outside shots.  We’ll pulling for the Hoyas, but Ohio State has too much talent.

NCAA Tournament – East Regional

Posted by Patrick on March 22, 2007

Last up are the beasts in the East in East Rutherford.

North Carolina Tar Heels  vs  Souther Cal Trojans

#1 North Carolina vs #5 Southern Cal

North Carolina comes in as yet another top seed who’s still winning, but not in convincing fashion.  Tyler Hansbrough has finally shed his facemask as it looked like he couldn’t see 2 feet in front of him.  UNC will need him to step up as USC comes in after a convincing win over #4 Texas.  USC’s looking good, but Carolina’s got too many horses.

Vanderbilt Commodores  vs  Georgetown Hoyas

#6 Vanderbilt vs #2 Georgetown

Vanderbilt’s another ‘under the radar’ team who’s quietly made the Sweet 16, but make no mistake, this team can play defense.  It’s win over Florida in the regular season established the Commodores as at top SEC team.  Georgetown is another team making us at Sport nostolgic for the old days of Ewing, Mourning, and Mutombo.  And yet, the Hoyas play like they did 20 years ago:  dominating the inside and tough defense.  Look for the Hoyas to take Vandy, and the East.

Kobe goes for 3 in a row?

Posted by Patrick on March 21, 2007

Kobe Bryant Shoe from NikeYeah, he’s won 3 titles in a row, but Kobe Bryant goes for a Lakers record 3 consecutive games scoring over 50 points in each game.  Elgin Baylor and Wilt Chamberlin were the other Lakers to accomplish the feat.  Kobe scored 65 against Portand to stop the Lakers 7 game losing streak, then dropped 50 against Minnesota.  His chance for 3 will come in Memphis on 3/22.

You want #8’s (what’s with the #24 switch?) Nike Air Zoom Huarache 2K4 – Kobe Bryant Edition?  Check out Amazon for $449.

NCAA Tournament – Midwest Regional

Posted by Patrick on

Let’s take a look at the Friday – Sunday games with the Midwest Regional in St. Louis

Florida Gators  vs  Butler Bulldogs

#1 Flordia Gators vs #5 Butler Bulldogs

The Gators are looking to repeat as tourney champs with its entire team back.  Although they’ve won the SEC tourney, they don’t seem to look like the dominant team we thought they’d be.  Butler’s a bit surprising at the #5 seed, but there’s nothing surprising about their defense.  Look for the Butler to keep this close, but the Gators bite the ‘Dogs.

Oregon Ducks  vs  UNLV Runnin Rebels

#3 Oregon Ducks vs #7 UNLV Runnin Rebels

The Ducks finished a quiet 3rd place in the PAC 10, including winning the conference tournament.  Aaron Brooks leads the team in scoring and assists.  We at Sportthestyle are happy to see UNLV back in the Sweet 16.  We long for the days of Moses Scurry, Larry Johnson, and Stacey Augmon, but it’s now Lon Kruger and his Kevin as being the ‘feel-good’ team of the tourney.  The Rebs make us nostalgic, but Oregon gets the win.

NCAA Tournament – South Regional

Posted by Patrick on March 20, 2007

Up next is the South Regional being held in San Antonio

The Ohio State Buckeyes vs  Tennessee Volunteers

#1 Ohio State vs #5 Tennessee

Ohio State comes in on a roll with several key wins and taking the Big 10 tournament.  Led by freshman phenom Greg Oden inside, the Buckeyes guards get plenty of outside looks.  Coming off a ‘lucky’ overtime win against Xavier in the 2nd round, OSU looks to keep their win streak going.  Tennessee comes in as one of the highest scoring offenses in the NCAA this year.  Their scoring potential could make this game interesting.  Look for a ton of points in this one, but OSU gets the win.

Texas A&M Aggies  vs  Memphis Tigers

#3 Texas A&M Aggies vs #2 Memphis Tigers

The Aggies are looking at a sizeable ‘home court’ advantage playing in their home state.  This program has come into its own under coach Billy Gillespie and has been able to score bigtime recruits like Acie Law.  Sport The Style has been a big John Calipari fans since his days at UMass.  He’s done an awesome job this year considering the injuries the Tigers have faced.  We’re inclined to go with the Coach who’s been this far before, but the home crowd pushes the Aggies to the win.

NCAA Sweet 16 – West Regional

Posted by Patrick on March 19, 2007

65 teams are now down to 16 after the 1st 2 rounds of the 2007 NCAA Basketball Tournament.  No double digit seed has made it this far, but there are some feel-good schools worth rooting for.  Over the next 4 days, we here at Sport will take a look at each bracket.

Up first:  West Regional – San Jose

Kansas Jayhawks vs  Southern Illinois Salukis

#1 Kansas vs #4 Southern Illinois – Kansas is on a 13 game win streak, including an overtime win over Texas in the Big 12 conference tournament.  The Jayhawks are shooting over 55% from the field in the first two games of the NCAA tourney, including a 12 pt win over Kentucky (what in the name of Adolph Rupp is going on in Lexington?).  The Salukis are the strongest of the mid-major teams and if the defense can slow the KU guards, they have a chance.  Take the Jayhawks.

Pittsburgh Panthers  vs  UCLA Bruins

#3 Pittsburgh vs #2 UCLA – Both teams won their first 2 games of the tourney, but neither are standing out.  Pitt has gone 3-3 in their last 6 games before the NCAA’s, including a 23 pt loss to Georgetown in the Big East tourney finals.  UCLA dropped its last 2 games, including a first round in the Pac 10 tourney to California.  When in doubt, go with the team who’s been there before.  Go with the Bruins in this one.

Eric Maynor sinks the DukiesGreg Paulus, maybe you should have taken that football scholly to Notre Dame after today.  VCU’s Eric Maynor’s 22 points, including this basket with 1.8 seconds left, led the Rams in the upset over Duke 79-77 for the tourney’s first upset.  Maynor and Paulus, putting in 25 pts of his own, bumped and shoved each other the entire game, setting up an awesome point guard matchup to watch.

VCU fans, we’ve got your Rams t-shirts ready to go!

Yao MingYao Ming threw down 16 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in his first game since December 23rd, but Lebron Jams and the Cavs got the game with a 91-85 win over the Houston Rockets.  Yao, who said he felt ‘normal’, missed his first 5 shots and airballing his first shot form 5 feet!  Needless to say, he’s been better.

    Mutombo is still alive?

Posted by Patrick on March 3, 2007

Rumor has it Dikembe Mutombo is not only among the living, but still playing in the NBA.  Not only that, but against the Denver Nuggets, his old team, he became the oldest player in NBA history to have over 20 rebounds in a game (total of 22 with 8 offensive).  Don’t know what’s more amazing….Dikembe’s feat at his age or how bad the Nuggets inside play is lately.
